Roughly 130 ’Eaters attended the Maneater’s 60th birthday reunion May 1-3. Activities included a Happy Hour at the Heidelberg, a special alumni Hoochfest, panel discussions and a banquet to conclude the ceremonies.
It was nice to see six decades — and yes, all six decades were represented — of ’Eaters come back to Columbia to celebrate this organization’s birthday. Many stories were told and many archives sifted through in the newsroom. And the “The Maneater throughout the year” panel discussion showed how the paper has changed throughout history, from expanding sections, changing print schedules and the number of pages printed, and a greater online presence.
The other panel discussions were “J-School skills outside the field” and “Tips and tricks of the trade,” with speakers from Bloomberg, USA Today, CNN, The New York Times, a former Congressman and multiple lawyers, technology specialists and much more, shared their knowledge and experiences with the audience that consisted of alumni and current Maneater staffers.
At the banquet the former and incoming Editors-in-Chief Katie Pohlman and Elizabeth Loutfi, respectively, spoke about their time at the paper and Loutfi’s vision for next year. There was also an auction of old bond volumes and t-shirts from past reunions and staffs.
The Columbia Missourian previewed our reunion.
